Because this was my first picture book ever, I had to figure out, what kind of technique I wanted to use. During the whole process until the book is finished there would be changes and I wanted to be prepared as good as I could. So I decided to draw all the characters, elements, etc. as single parts (picture above) and put the whole scenery together at the computer. When I had to redo the illustration I simply could replace a character or element without drawing the whole picture again.

The hardest part for me was to find the right colors for the cows. Because Mucky was brown already I didn't wanted to use this color. Fortunately here in Switzerland there are lots of cows. Every morning when I went to work by bicycle I drove past a meadow with beautiful black and white cows. They were looking pretty funny, because except for a wide white band the fur was black. After a short research I found out that these cows were Belted Galloways, the perfect breed for my illustrations.
